How Invisalign® Clear Aligners Work

Invisalign® uses a series of custom-made, removable plastic trays to move teeth gradually into better positions. Each set of trays is worn for a designated period before switching to the next in the sequence. Over time, the cumulative movement of each stage brings teeth into proper alignment.

The trays are made from smooth, clear plastic that fits snugly over the teeth. Most people won’t notice you’re wearing them, which is one of the main reasons patients choose this system over traditional braces. For treatment to work as planned, aligners need to be worn for about 22 hours per day – they come out for eating, drinking anything other than water, and oral hygiene.

In some cases, small tooth-colored attachments are bonded to specific teeth to help guide more complex movements, such as rotations or bite corrections. These are part of the plan from the start and are removed when treatment is complete.

Invisalign® Teen: Built for Active Lifestyles

Invisalign® Teen includes features designed specifically for younger patients. Each set of trays has a blue compliance indicator that fades with wear, so both teens and parents can see whether the aligners are being worn as directed. The program also includes replacement trays to account for occasional lost or damaged sets, a realistic consideration for active teenagers.

For teens involved in sports, music, or other activities, the removable nature of the trays is a significant advantage. Aligners can be taken out for contact sports or instrument playing and put back in immediately after. Oral hygiene stays straightforward since there are no brackets or wires to navigate around – just remove the trays, brush and floss normally, and put them back in.

Not every teen case is suited to Invisalign®. Some complex bite issues are better addressed with braces. We review each case carefully and recommend the option that will actually produce the best result, not just the one that sounds most appealing.

What to Expect During Treatment

The First Visit

Treatment begins with a thorough exam and a digital scan. We use this to map out tooth positions and plan the full sequence of movements before any trays are made. You’ll see a 3D simulation of the expected changes, which gives both patients and parents a realistic picture of where treatment is headed.

Check-In Appointments

Patients return for progress checks roughly every eight to twelve weeks. At these visits, we confirm that the teeth are tracking as planned, make adjustments as needed, and issue the next set of trays. Visits are efficient and typically brief.

After Treatment

When the final tray is complete, retention begins. We fit patients with retainers to hold teeth in their corrected positions and schedule follow-up visits to monitor stability. Retainers are a non-negotiable part of the process – without them, teeth will shift back over time.

Caring for Your Aligners

Good aligner habits protect both the trays and your teeth. Here’s what we recommend:

  • Rinse trays with cool water every time you remove them.
  • Brush trays gently with a soft toothbrush morning and evening.
  • Always store aligners in their case when not in use.
  • Avoid hot water, which can warp the plastic.
  • Don’t use whitening products on the trays.
  • Call us promptly if a tray breaks or goes missing so we can arrange a replacement.

Wearing aligners for the full 22 hours daily is the single biggest factor in whether treatment stays on schedule. Falling short of that consistently can extend treatment time or affect results.

Invisalign® Clear Aligners in Wasilla: Frequently Asked Questions

Is Invisalign® as effective as braces?

For mild-to-moderate alignment issues, yes. For more complex cases involving significant bite correction or severe crowding, braces may be more effective. We evaluate each case individually and give an honest recommendation.

How long does treatment take?

Treatment length varies by case. Some patients finish in as little as six months; others need eighteen months or longer. We outline an estimated timeline at the start of treatment based on your specific tooth movements.

Does Invisalign® hurt?

There’s typically some pressure when switching to a new set of trays, which is normal and indicates the teeth are moving. It usually settles within a day or two. It’s generally more comfortable than the soreness that follows brace adjustments.

Can I eat and drink normally?

You remove the trays to eat and drink, so there are no food restrictions. Just brush before putting trays back in to avoid trapping food or bacteria against your teeth.

What happens if I lose a tray?

Contact our office right away. We’ll advise whether to move forward to the next tray or wait for a replacement, depending on where you are in the sequence.
